The nose is the second most-important sense for human beings. It’s primary function is to detect odors and identify different kinds of scents. Due to the fact that the nose has such a prominent role in everyday life, it's quite often injured or infected with an infectious disease. The thing with the nose is that it can be injured very easily—for example from a cold or a cosmetic surgery. In this article, I will talk about the different kinds of so-called rhinologic diseases. Rhinology is a field of medicine dealing with the nose and its diseases. A lot of people get a cold every year because there are a lot of viruses in the air during fall and winter seasons. Another kind of nose problems are allergic reactions. A typical example for that is hay fever. Hay fever is an allergic reaction of the body against the growing pollen in spring. The mucous membrane in your nose gets swollen because of all the pollen grains it comes into contact with, which leads to sneezing, running nose and itchy eyes. There are tablets or injections you can get from a doctor or pharmacist to get rid of the symptoms. Sometimes allergies are so strong that they can cause asthma attacks. An acute sinusitis occurs when there are inflammatory processes in the sinuses which are caused by an infection or allergens. The most common types of sinusitis are caused by colds, nasal allergies, hay fever and air pollution. The nose can also be damaged by cosmetic surgery. If you want to change the shape or size of your nose then it’s possible to do that with plastic surgery. Plastic surgery is very popular at the moment but has its risks like skin damage, scarring and changes in facial features. A common nasal disease is known as rhinologic disease (rhinitis, rhinitis medicamentosa).
